The Wistar Institute would like to express condolences to the family and friends of Senator Arlen Specter. The cancer research community lost a tremendous advocate yesterday, and Wistar honors his long standing efforts on behalf of both cancer scientists and cancer survivors to increase and sustain federal funding for the National Institutes of Health and related agencies.
"Arlen Specter was a true champion for biomedical research,” said Russel E. Kaufman, M.D., president and CEO of The Wistar Institute. “His thoughtful leadership and determined advocacy for federal funding for research led to advances that have greatly improved public health and touched countless lives. He leaves an impressive legacy in the cancer research community and he will be greatly missed."
In 2006, Sen. Specter graciously accepted The Wistar Institute President’s Award for his steadfast national leadership over many years in securing vital funding for biomedical research, and his enduring commitment to cancer research advocacy. In the years since, he had remained a stalwart friend of the Institute, and Wistar will always appreciate his kindness and generosity.
