The Wistar-Schoemaker International Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Wistar Institute is expanding its international network of collaborations to educate the next generation of scientific leaders.
The recently launched Wistar-Schoemaker International Postdoctoral Fellowship program is a partnership with Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in the Netherlands to bring LUMC graduates to Wistar for postdoctoral training under the mentorship of a Wistar faculty member.
Supported by a three-year fellowship, three recent LUMC Ph.D. or M.D. graduates each year will train in a Wistar laboratory that matches their research interests.
A unique feature of this program is that at the end of their training at Wistar, fellows will be supported in obtaining starting faculty positions in the Netherlands with the help of repatriation awards from partnering Dutch research institutes and the government.
The program promotes scientific and intellectual exchange and collaboration between investigators in the Netherlands and the United States.
About LUMC
LUMC, the medical school of Leiden University, is a modern medical center for research, education and patient care, with research programs that range from fundamental to applied clinical research.
LUMC is located in a biotech-rich region in the city of Leiden along with the Leiden Bio Science Park, one of the top five science parks in Europe. The Bio Science Park houses Janssen Biologics, originally Centocor, a Philadelphia-based biotechnology company that in the 1980s translated Wistar’s seminal research in monoclonal antibody technology into a commercial platform that underpins a significant number of today’s biomedicines.
About Hubert J.P. Schoemaker
The program’s namesake Hubert J.P. Schoemaker, Ph.D., was a Dutch entrepreneur, biotechnology pioneer and one of Centocor’s co-founders. He was deeply committed to improving human health by advancing scientific inquiry and inspiring future generations of investigators and entrepreneurs.
The Wistar-Schoemaker Postdoctoral Fellowship builds upon his guiding principles of mentorship, optimism and innovation.

Wistar Science Synergy Through Fostering International Collaborations
Wistar sat down with the first graduate students from Leiden University Medical Center to discuss their experience observing the glycomics research being done in Dr. Abdel-Mohsen’s laboratory.
