The Wistar Institute Land Acknowledgement
The Wistar Institute in Philadelphia honors, acknowledges, and celebrates the Lenni-Lenape as the original people of this land and recognizes that our organization is on the original territory of the Lenni-Lenape, “Lenapehoking.” The Lenape People lived in harmony with one another upon this territory for thousands of years and who during the 1680s, negotiated with William Penn to lead the founding of the Pennsylvania colony.
We affirm the aspiration of the great Lenape Chief Tamanend, that there be harmony between the indigenous people of this land and the descendants of this land, “as long as the rivers and creeks flow, and the sun, moon, and stars shine.”
In the spirit of giving thanks and celebrating the many contributions of the Lenni-Lenape people, The Wistar Institute respectfully continues its collaborative groundbreaking research to discover treatments and cures to save lives and improve the health of all.
We are committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming environment with equal opportunities for all to discover, thrive, and contribute to Wistar’s mission of developing breakthrough biomedical discoveries to improve the health of all communities worldwide.
