Phlebotomy

Blood donations will be used to study and compare the characteristics and/or behaviors of healthy cells and disease cells; study new markers of disease; test new drugs; and/or evaluate characteristics associated with disease protection.

Our current and future research aims to identify and address the causes, prevention, early detection and diagnosis, and potential treatments of cancer or infectious diseases.

To donate blood, you must:

• be over 18 years of age,
• be in good health, and
• weigh more than 100 lbs.

During your first visit at The Wistar Institute you will go through a screening process. This ensures that you meet our eligibility criteria and that it is safe for you to donate blood. After we receive your consent, our phlebotomist will:

• record your name, address, contact information, and demographic information,
• measure and record your blood pressure, pulse and temperature,
• ask you questions about your health and medications to be sure you can donate blood safely, and
• take 10 mL of blood from a vein in your arm to perform several tests in order to determine if you are eligible to participate in our program.

Because your blood will be used for research purposes, we need to make sure you do not have some communicable diseases, such as HIV and/or hepatitis C. Therefore, we will test your blood to assess for signs of prior exposure to these diseases. Our phlebotomist will inform you in greater detail about our testing procedures.

Our phlebotomist will draw a small blood sample (10 mL or about 2 tsps.) during your first visit for screening. When your eligibility to donate blood is confirmed, you may be asked to donate between 10-500 mL of blood, depending on the Institute’s needs.

You will receive $5 for the screening visit. If you are eligible to be enrolled in the program, your compensation for donations may range between $15 and $45, depending on the amount of blood donated.
