Recognition of Trainee Excellence
Several awards and fellowships are bestowed upon Wistar trainees annually:
Ching Jer Chern Memorial Award
The Ching Jer Chern Memorial Award is given annually to the postdoctoral fellow who has written the most outstanding scientific paper in the previous year. The award was established in 1989 by June Chern in memory of her husband, Dr. Chern, who was a member of the scientific staff from 1974 until his death from cancer in 1987.
Christopher M. Davis Memorial Fellowship
The Christopher M. Davis Memorial Fellowship was established in 1996 by The Wistar Institute as an expression of lasting appreciation for Harold and Eleanor Davis' commitment to the Institute and in memory of their son, Christopher. The fellowship is given annually to an outstanding Wistar postdoctoral fellow conducting breast cancer research.
The Benjamin and Mary Siddons Measey Foundation Fellowship
The Benjamin and Mary Siddons Measey Foundation Fellowship offers advanced training to clinicians who are training in a Wistar laboratory and preparing for a career in academic medicine.
Dr. Monica H.M. Shander Memorial Fellowship
The Dr. Monica H.M. Shander Memorial Fellowship is conferred annually to a Wistar predoctoral trainee who displays notable excellence in scholastics and aptitude and diligence in the laboratory. The award was established in 1986 in memory of former Wistar predoctoral trainee Monica H.M. Shander by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shander, and Dr. Hilary Koprowski.
